Laughter: The Navajo Way (Humorous Stories of the Navajo)
Usually ships in 24 hours
Alan Wilson / Audio BK/Cassette / Published 1970
Review: The author, Alan Wilson (kawilson@cia-g.com) "The book is a lively study of Navajo humor. This book was great fun to write because it took me, as never before, into the humorous workings of the Navajo mind. The stories provide unique insight into Navajo culture, as well. These stories, brief and cogent as they are, reflect the Navajo love of, and genius with, word play and humor. Although some of the stories are very old, they are told and listened to with great relish by contemporary Navajos. Three basic styles of humor are exhibited in this volume: word plays entirely in Navajo whose intentions are either deliberate or whose denouements depend upon misunderstanding, misinterpretation, or faulty hearing; word plays, involving both the Navajo and English languages, which capitalize upon a marginal grasp of English by the character involved, just one small example being the homophonic relationship of English "television" with Navajo "telii alizh" (the donkey is urinating); and situational stories whose humor results from practical joking, foolish behavior, tongue twisting, accidentally ridiculous situations, and so forth. Each story is presented in Navajo and colloquial English and is thoroughly glossed with respect to free and literal meanings, shades of meaning, and idiomatic usage. Explanations of text accompany each story. All of the stories are tape recorded in Navajo by native speakers. --This text refers to the paperback edition of this title."
