TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is recruiting
young singers for its Children’s Choir.
The choir will serve as a feeder program for the award-winning Cherokee National Youth Choir and will focus on language development. Choir members must be in grades 2-6 and must be citizens of the Cherokee Nation. Members will sing almost exclusively in Cherokee and will participate in formal language lessons as part of their training. According to choir director, Lora Miller, the choir is used to develop interest in the Cherokee language and to develop singers for the Cherokee National Youth Choir. “The choir supports the language initiative,” said Miller. “It is an essential key to the development of young speakers and a wonderful way for young people to become involved with their Cherokee heritage.” The first rehearsal will be Monday, April 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Tsa La Gi Community Room, located behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees at the Cherokee Nation complex south of Tahlequah.
