"Sequoyah Schools' Senior Rebecca Steed."
TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - Sequoyah Schools’ senior Rebecca Steed has been named a member of the National Society of High School Scholars for her hard work and dedication to excellence.

“It’s truly a blessing to be honored for all of my hard work,” Steed said.

Membership to the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) is by invitation only and is limited to only a select few high school students every year. Once accepted, students are eligible to compete for NSHSS scholarships totaling more than $12,000 annually.

Steed has also received the President’s Leadership Class scholarship from Northeastern State University and plans to attend NSU in fall and major in nursing.

“My mom has inspired me,” Steed said. “She is a nurse and I grew up around the health field and I enjoy taking care of people.”

Steed, 17, of Tahlequah, is the daughter of Jan White and James Steed. She is Cherokee, Navajo and Osage and is a member of American Indian Science and Engineering Society, National Honor Society and the varsity cheerleading squad. She has been named a Muskogee Phoenix Academic All-Star, and is on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll.

Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students located near Tahlequah, Okla., originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now operated by the Cherokee Nation and known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. It is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 high school students every year. For more information call 918-453-5400.
