Cherokees Offer Community Language Classes

TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is hosting a series of Cherokee language classes in several locations throughout the fall, starting this week.

The classes are coordinated by the tribe’s Cultural Resource Center, which provides services and information that work to revitalize Cherokee language and heritage. The language courses are part of the culture and history initiative that will help to preserve the Cherokee language.

George Stopp will instruct a class at the Fairfield Community Building beginning Wednesday, October 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information contact Bill Collins, phone: 918-696-2961.

Another Cherokee language class will be offered at the Greasy Community Building beginning Monday, October 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. The instructor will be Florene Smith. For more information contact Charlie Shell by phone: 918-774-0857.

Joe Grayson will teach a class at Bell School beginning Monday, October 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information contact Nancy Oosahwee by phone: 918-696-7181.

A class will be offered at Round Springs Church in Delaware County beginning on Tuesday, October 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. Rufus King will provide instruction. For more information contact Wade Blevins by phone: 918-791-1908 or Sherri Kamp, phone: 918-314-2244.

Dorothy Powell will teach a Cherokee language class at the Webbers Falls Community Building, beginning Tuesday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information call 918-464-2631.

In Craig County, a language class will be offered at Bluejacket City Hall beginning Tuesday, October 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Lula Elk will be the instructor. Another class will be offered at the Vinita Housing Authority, beginning Thursday, October 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information on that class contact Lisa Trice-Turtle, phone: 918-316-6718.

Cherokee language classes will also be offered in Mayes County at Locust Grove School beginning Thursday, October 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. Sandra Turner will be the instructor. For more information contact Melissa Adams at (918) 530-7510. Another class will be offered at Wickliffe School beginning Tuesday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sequoyah Guess will teach the class. A language class will be offered at Belfonte School beginning Tuesday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. with Jim Henson as the instructor. For more information contact Paul Pinkerton, phone: 918-427-3522.

Classes are free and open to the public. Classes are ten weeks long and material will be provided.
