JAY, Oklahoma - The Cherokee Nation recently contributed $15,000 to
the Christian Community Care Center, Delaware County, a multipurpose
organization that reaches out to serve and help meet the needs of local
community members through several different services.
The tribe’s contribution will go to one service in particular, Freedom
House, a homeless shelter for women located in Jay. Freedom House helps
women transitioning from correctional facilities and women passing
through with nowhere to go. The shelter provides vocational training, a
12-step recovery program and family counseling.
“It is important for us to help them [women] in any way we can,” said
Pricilia Morgan, executive director of the Christian Community Care
Center. “This contribution will help fund the needs we have to get our
shelter open by July 1.”
The shelter houses up to 12 women, with the needs of each individual
determining the length of her stay. Freedom House helps the women get
ready to go back into society and, in addition, helps them with job
opportunities. Cherokee Nation’s contribution will be used specifically
for purchasing furniture and the construction of a new kitchenette.
“I really appreciate this help and our endeavor in making this vision
come to pass,” said Morgan.
