Sequoyah Volleyball Team Hosts Tournament

TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - The Sequoyah varsity volleyball team will host the Sequoyah Tournament this Friday and Saturday at The Place Where They Play.

Teams that are participating in the tournament are Sequoyah, Hulbert, Coweta, Salina, Tahlequah, Westville, Inola and Webster.

Sequoyah will open the tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. against Hulbert. The teams that will play on Friday are Sequoyah, Hulbert, Coweta and Salina. The tournament is “pool play” style meaning that all teams in the same pool will play against each other. The teams that will play on Saturday are Tahlequah, Westville, Inola and Webster. Games will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The top two teams in each pool will advance to a bracket-style play-off that will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Plaques will be award to the first and second place teams. Coaches will also select 10 all-tournament players to receive medals at the conclusion of the tournament.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children. The concession stand will be available and gates will open 30 minutes prior to game time.

Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The school is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 Native American students every year.
