The Cherokee Nation will be offering a five-week tobacco cessation class
on Tuesdays each week beginning December 8, from 11 a.m. until 12 noon
at the Cherokee Nation AMO Health Center in Salina. The classes will
run through Tuesday, January 6, 2010.
According to studies, three out of every four smokers would like to stop smoking and tobacco use. However, success isn’t easy. Studies have shown that many failed in their first attempt, even among those who eventually succeeded. “There’s actually little connection between the number of previous quit attempts and eventual success, so previous failures do not mean that you can’t succeed,” said Laura Sawney-Spencer, Public Health Educator for the Cherokee Nation AMO Health Center. “Quitting smoking is hard to do. You have to take an active part in developing your motivations and making them more effective.” Participants in the classes do not have to be Cherokee Nation citizens or Native American, however, you must be eligible for a chart at the health center to obtain any medication you may need. Those who are not eligible will be referred to the State of Oklahoma Tobacco Hotline. Anyone interested in joining the class can contact Sawney-Spencer by phone: 918-434-8622 or by e-mail: laura-spencer@cherokee.org. |
