Parents may fill out an application for their child for Head Start at the age of two, if he/she is turning age 3 by Sept. 1, for the upcoming school year. Children entering the three and four-year-old programs must turn three by Sept. 1, of the current academic year. Applications may be obtained from the center nearest you. Copies of the following documents must be submitted with the application before it will be considered complete: a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card; a social security card (optional); an immunization record; a state certified birth certificate; and current verification of income, which can be check stubs that are no more than 30 days old, tax records, W-2 statement from the parent’s employer or a TANF statement. For the Children’s Village Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Cherokee County, you may pick up an application at the ECU office in Tahlequah from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or call the office at (918) 453-5757 or toll free at (888) 458-4393 to request an application be mailed to you. All completed applications can be mailed to the ECU main office at P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, OK 74465. Other locations include: Adair County: If you already have an application on file and it has been more than a year, an updated application must be submitted. If your address or phone number has changed, please contact ECU to update your application. Created in 1965, Head Start is the most successful, longest-running, national school readiness program in the United States. It provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. Nearly 25 million pre-school aged children have benefited from Head Start.
