Sequoyah Schools’ boys’ basketball coach, Larry Grigg, has been selected by his peers to coach the boys’ basketball All-State game this summer. Grigg will coach the small east team. "It’s an honor for our coaches to be selected as All-State coaches, said Gina Stanley, Sequoyah Schools’ superintendent. "It means that they are not only doing a great job, but that other coaches recognize that they are doing a great job." Grigg, of Inola, joined the Sequoyah Schools’ staff in 1997 and has taken eight teams to the state tournament in that time, winning three gold balls and one silver. Sequoyah’s boys’ basketball team made an appearance in the class 3A state tournament this year, but was defeated in the second round. Sequoyah’s girls’ fast-pitch softball coach, Jeff Turtle, was selected to coach the fast-pitch softball All-State game earlier this year. Sequoyah’s girls’ fast-pitch softball team earned a trip to the state tournament this year for the first time in the school’s history. The team ended the season with a second round loss in the tournament and a regional championship. Turtle has taught at Sequoyah for more than fifteen years and has coached football, baseball and softball. The basketball All-State game will be played during the Oklahoma Coach’s Association’s annual conference on July 30 at the ORU Mabee Center in Tulsa. Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The school is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 Native American students every year. Sequoyah Schools is located five miles southwest of Tahlequah, Oklahma. For more information call 918-453-5400 or visit the Sequoyah Schools’ web site. |
