23 anniversary of his arrest.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1999

UPDATED LIST OF PROTESTS TO FREE
US POLITICAL PRISONER LEONARD PELTIER THIS

Note: When Gina showed Leonard the last list of February 6th protests he was very happy and quite impressed. He is excited that so many people are organizing in so many communities. He is getting a lot of positive mail about the increased attention about his case. Please announce the June 25, 26 and 27th Organizing Conference at your events. We will be emailing you information to hand out about the conference. It will be happening in Lawrence, Kansas. Leonard is excited that the movement to free him is growing and that the support groups are getting more organized. Please plan to attend the Conference and get the opportunity to meet the other organizers on this list.

ATLANTA, GA
The LPSG, Atlanta is interested in participating in the fast for Leonard Peltier. So far we have around a half dozen people who have committed to fasting for four days, one person following the next. There are many people in the Indian community here that we have not called yet. I'm sure that more will be interested. We're having a meeting this coming Sunday and will know a little more about our commitment afterwards. In the mean time, please send more information, press-releases, guidelines, etc.

I talked to Arthur Miller yesterday and he said his people will be doing twelve day fasts. I'll see if anyone here is willing and able to do that. I look forward to hearing from you.

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
Feb. 6, 1999 - afternoon - Wake at U.S. Embassy or protest action at international airport Zaventem (depends on how many people will come) We're also checking how many people would participate in a 48-hour hunger fast. And the petition drive has been increased via email and hopefully before February 6th via a new website (since our Internet Coordinator is having summer vacation - he lives in Australia - and complains he's bored, I'm sure the page will be finished this week... smile) More details will follow later.

Hi, we are a group of young French anarchists who want to try and do something for the international day of protest to free Leonard Peltier. We are living in a very small city and are very few people, but we already did a lot of flyers and petitions that we pass around, but we need to know if any other groups will do something in our aera, etc. so we could try and do something "bigger"... We also need to know to who we have to send out our petitions to free Leonard Peltier and if there's some specific issue that you want us to insist on, etc... (we are young people and have no real exprerience about doing petitions, etc. ) I hope to hear from you soon,

Take care, Christophe xXx

HELSINKI, FINLAND

MILWAUKEE. WI
From Milwaukee-planned march and rally for Leonard Peltier Feb. 6, 1999. The plans for Feb. 6th go well, I went to the board meeting at the Riverwest Art Center on wed. night and made sure that we'd have that space on the sixth. So far the plans are to meet in Gordon Park (Humboldt and Locust) at 1:00pm, and march to the Riverwest Art Center (Fratney and Auer) for speakers, food by Food Not Bombs, and afterwards a video showing of a movie called "Lakota Woman" which is highly accurate portrayal of the wounded knee incident. I have about 100 flyers left, and will be flyering this weekend along the route of the march, and in several places. I'll also be contacting several other students from UWM, one of whom knows a great deal on Peltier, the other on the Puerto Rican political prisoners, and asking them to speak along with myself on the 6th. What i need is help spreading the word--getting people to make concrete commitments to be there, and then getting those people to do the same. Please tell everyone with AJRC, as i know they will support this action. Attached to this email is a .jpg image of the flyer that I came up with for the march. It'd be great for someone else to copy them and distribute them at places that I don't go to often. Thanks for your help fellow worker, it deffinately makes a difference.

Just thought I would let you know that people in Regina, Sasktachewan, Canada are also sponsoring and event on Feb. 6 to support Leonard.

The Saskatchewan Coaliton Against Racism (S.C.A.R) is hosting a rally, informational, and petition signing at Dewdney Park. We will make sure people understand what Leonard has gone through, who he is, and learn about the Canadian governments shameful involvement in his case. Petitions will be circulated and sent to the Minister of Justice in Ottawa in regards to the fradulent extradition of Leonard from Canada, a demand for a release of the report on this matter, and a request for Leonard's immediate return to Canada as a free man! We would also like to draw a relationship between Leonard's case and Mumi Abu Jamal and the great union they have formed and the bridges they have created for people of colour.

Rally Feb 6th to Free Leonard Peltier, American Indian Political Prisoner Join others internationally rallying for Peltier's release for outside medical care, freedom and for Senate Oversight Investigation and Hearings.

Feb. 6th is the twenty-fourth anniversary of Peltier's illegal extradition from Canada and falsely conviction. Peltier's jaw continues to cause him agony as he can eat only soft food through a straw. Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act point to a US government covert program against the American Indian Movement, but a full Senate Oversight Investigation is needed to expose the real killers and clear his name.

Join us in calling for apologies and reparations for our Original Americans, starting with the Oglala Sioux of Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

STARKVILLE, MS
My name is Roberta Salyers and I am trying to organize a demonstration (rally or candlelight vigil) at Mississippi State University (in Starkville) to mark Leonard's 23rd year in prison on the 6th of February. There are no Native American student organizations on campus, but I know that a large population of Choctaw live in Mississippi. As I have only lived here a little over a year, I do not have any contacts in the community. Could you provide me with names and numbers of other activists in the area who might be willing to come to such an event and perhaps perform a cleansing ritual or provide drums? In the past, you put me in contact with John Green, ironically another graduate student in my department. He had, however, already given up and has since moved away. Thanks for any advice or help that you may provide.

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO
We have one problem, a location for the Feb. 6/99, event. On Dec. 19/98, we were given the Civic Square. However, Bon Soo - the winter carnival is going on during this time period. All civic facilites are booked as are many church halls and other places. I am asking a faculty member at the local university to book a large room for us. If this fails, we will move our event to Feb. 13/99. However, PEACE magazine is putting a notice in their issue to be on the stands within a few weeks noting the Sault event and giving me as a contact number for more information. Again, our event will emphasize the need to contact the Minister of Justice and Members of Parliament about Leonard and to urge the Justice Minister to release the report on the investigation into the original extradition from Canada to the US. He are putting pressure on our local MP to do something. Other MPs have been contacted and got back to us that they support our efforts for Leonard. We also will be handing out material on the Lubicon case.

Rally And Music Benefit
Friday, February 5, 1999
AT THE JAVA HUT CAFE (Rte. 116 in Sunderland, MA)
Beginning AT 8:00 P.M. / TEL: (413)665-2255

Our LPSG formed this past October when we learned that Leonard and the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee called for nonviolent civil disobedience actions. In light of Leonard's seriously impaired health, and the exceptionally harsh treatment he continues to receive, we agree that a bold CD strategy has become a necessity.

Propelled by the momentum from our December 19th action and lack of coordinated CD actions for February 6, we've chosen February 6th - the 23rd anniversary of Leonard's incarceration - as a suitable date to conduct a legal rally and picket demonstration that will feature chanting and drumming, talks from several speakers and dispersing literature to onlookers. These printed materials are focussed on getting Canada to finally release its Extradition Report, and include a superb letter from Lode Vanoost, a member of Belgian Parliament who supports this effort.

Our aim is to continue building momentum to raise public awareness about this ongoing breach of justice, and increase pressure for Leonard's release. We demand that this will be the last anniversary of Leonard's incarceration!

We hope that the LPDC and other groups will join with us in pledging to conduct CD actions on Columbus Day, October 11th, 1999, if Leonard is still in prison. This will give us plenty of time to plan effective and united actions to gain world media coverage. In addition, we hope there will be large legal rallies everywhere on Observed Columbus Day in the U.S. - which falls the day before the proposed CD - calling for Leonard's freedom and to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day.

Many people have misconceptions about civil disobedience. We see CD in this case as a commitment to be civilly responsible. Our LPSG plans a primary CD action on October 12th in which we will simply tape signs on the federal building until we are arrested. Then we could bring up the content of the signs for our defense. One sign we are considering is:
"FBI ABUSES THREATEN DEMOCRACY - FREE LEONARD PELTIER"

The Greater New England LPSG is seeking at least two other groups to announce their commitment for the Columbus Day CD action on February 6th. We feel that even planning major CD actions puts pressure on Canada to release the Extradition Report, on members of Congress to call for investigative hearings, and on the President for Executive Clemency. Please contact me if your group (of at least three or four people) will commit to the October 12 CD action - or if you're interested in being kept informed on this initiative.

despite the admission by U.S. Prosecutors that they cannot
prove Peltier fired the shots that killed two FBI agents on

Hello.
My name is Farah Nazarali-Stranieri and I'm chairperson and founder of the Working Group on Indigenous Peoples at the George Washington University. On Tuesday Jan.19 we have our general meeting and I'm going to propose that we participate in a 24 hour hunger strike on Feb.6 and embark on a letter writing campaign on behalf of Leonard Peltier. I am quite sure my fellow students will be supportive of the idea. We will also plan to meet with members of congress on Feb.5, the day before to explain why we are going on a hunger strike and present letters to them. (I am a Canadian citizen and I know the Political Minister at the Canadian Embassy here in Washington and I have already spoken to him about the idea and I will be able to meet with him to present letters to the Minister of Justice in Canada.) We may need some informational materials and we may also buy some posters. In any case, I will let the Defense Committee know of the outcome of our meeting and the exact plans for our Feb.6 event.

In solidarity,

Farah Nazarali-Stranieri

VICTORIA, BC AND LOUISVILLE, KY
Greetings, I have gotten word that IWW members are helping to put on Feb. 6th actions also in Victoria, BC (vicwob@hotmail.com) and Louisville, KY (bmarch@aye.net). I have asked them to send you information.

HUNGER FAST UPDATE 1/25/99
Well this fast/hunger strike has really taken off. We now have 27 Fasters and 28 other people to get the statements out. That will be 55 Computers working. We are very lucky that we were able to set up a list for this. I noticed that in the list of Feb. 6th actions that S.F. will be dong a hunger strike, can we plug them into what is going on? I will send you the up-dated statement with the list of fasters below it, can you tell us if we are missing anyone? I put both of you on the date for statements for Feb. 8th. My thinking was, given that we are trying to get people to post their statement one day ahead of time, that both of you will be very busy on the 6th. I hope my thinking was right. Will Leonard be able to issue a statement on the fast/hunger strike that we can release on the morning of the 6th? If so we will need to post it on the list on later than the 5th. the 6th? If so we will need to post it on the list on later than the 5th.

BUFFALO, NY
I saw on the web that a fast/hunger strike is underway nationally to protest Leonard's continuing torture and imprisonment. I would very much like to join. I once coordinated a national chain-fast as a project of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, for several years. People would sign up and fast for anywhere from one day to a month and even more. The hope was that someone would be actively protesting exececutions every day. It is hard to say if the chain-fast was effective in a significant way, but it seemed to deepen the commitment of many people. I will encourage students and friends to become more involved in Leonard's campaign in the coming weeks and months. And we hope he will come and visit us in Buffalo when he is released. Soon!

While members of the Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America are unprepared to go on a fast in support of Leonard Peltier's campaign, we will be doing our part to spread the word through email and in our respective communities. Word has been dispatched to the Irish Republican Socialist Party as well for consideration.

Below is the message sent by Peter Urban, the National Coordinator for the IRSCNA and International Secretary for the IRSP. He can be reached directly at irsp@netwizards.net.
I'll be putting up this call for support on our website, which is located at http://irsm.org/irscna/events.html and would like to link to whatever website exists for this project or for Leonard Peltier in general.

I have been working very hard on this. I have 52 people who have committed to a 24 hour fast and will continue to support me while I go for 4 days.We are all ready and will spreading the message on the University of Michigan campus as soon as I get the posters and bumper stickers in the mail.Every one who is fasting with me will also take copies of the petitions and get them signed. Thanks for your help. Also, could you please post the address for the Leonard Peltier web site.
