Review Dirty Linen: Sharon Burch writes and sings primarily in the Navajo language. It is a mark of the strength and beauty of her musicianship that she communicates emotions and ideas clearly to those who do not speak her language. This is her second solo album, and on it she deals with themes of grief (mourning the recent loss of her grandfather and uncle) as well as celebration and recovery. "Hoogan," named after the circular dwelling of the Navajo, celebrates the beauty of story telling and of life. Working to balance the positive and the negative forces you to really be alive," and she works through her music to address the complexities of this task. The melodies will sound familiar to those who know folk music, and Burch's voice is rich and expressive, somewhat along the lines of Kristine Arnold or early Judy Collins. Reviews Amazon.com: Robbie Robertson tried to fuse Native American and rock sounds a year or two ago, but like most appeasement, it turned out to be neither fish nor fowl, merely a disappointment. Jerry Alfred is a Tutchone, from the Yukon. And, by God, he's made a cracking album. The fusion of native and nonnative is what Robertson's should have been, voice and drum to the front, the rest adding color and ambiance, never hurried. This is a different world slowly showing itself. Songs like "Taan Mun," with its water sounds, wouldn't be out of place in a chill-out room. About the only time this doesn't work is when it gets folksy and loses a touch of its mystery. Still, these places are few and far between.
