Cherokee Producer K.A.Gilliland and Director Andrew Sikora’s short film, “Stories of the Cherokees” has been selected to compete at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival in France May 14th-24th. It is the first time a Cherokee language film has made its European premier at the festival. In collaboration with Cherokee Nation Enterprises the film was initially commissioned for the Cherokee Travel Plaza in Roland with an aim at promoting Cherokee culture and language. The film, which is shot in Cherokee and English, and on location in the Cherokee Nation, features Cherokee storytellers and actors David Scott, Robert Lewis and Chris Smith. The Film is currently being sold at all of the Cherokee Nation gift shops. “Stories of the Cherokees” is a fusion of animation and live-action. This 15-minute HD film draws its inspirations from the traditions of Cherokee oral history. The subject is a glimpse the pre-European world on the continent as seen through the eyes of the Cherokees. This novel tale is artfully photographed in High Definition. Shot entirely on location the Cherokee Nation, the film captures the sacred beauty of the Cherokee Nation's lands. “Stories of the Cherokees” is a pioneering film produced in the native Cherokee Language. “Journey of the Cherokees” re-tells a story of migration. The animation techniques both the three and twodimensional styles are dramatic, striking and original. The live-action footage captures traditional storyteller, Robert Lewis, as he mingles naturally with animated retrospectives from the antediluvian journey. On the surface, “The Teacher” by David Scott tells a simple story. A bird goes to water in the morning and then continues with its daily prosaic activities. What makes” The Teacher” unique is distinctive style of a primitivistic animation, which brings memories of a mound-building society to life. The mood in the short tale of an “Ancient Warrior” is set with an original score comprised of Cherokee sound, instruments and traditional singing. Creating a symphony of nature, our protagonist does not need to speak at all - his actions speak for him. Witness and join on the adventure with truly enduring people and their undying traditions.
