Bonnie Raitt, The Indigo Girls, Joan Baez and Indigenous Kick off Honor the Earth tour, Saturday, September 30 in Billings, Montana.Grammy award winning musician Bonnie Raitt will join Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers as they embark on their fourth Honor the Earth concert tour to raise funds and awareness for Native environmental issues. Special guest Joan Baez will also perform and the rocking blues band Indigenous will open as the all-star line up arrives in Montana to Rock the Vote for Yellowstone's Buffalo.
A noon rally on Saturday, September 30 on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer will kick off the Montana leg of the Honor the Earth tour. The first show will be in Billings Saturday evening at the Shrine Auditorium. Honor the Earth Vote 2000 Save the Yellowstone Buffalo tour includes four urban and three reservation stops across Montana in five days. Details on the Northern Cheyenne, Blackfeet and Flathead Reservation stops, rallies and voter registration drives will be forthcoming.
The primary focus of this year's Honor the Earth tour is to get out the Indian Vote and to save the Yellowstone Buffalo. Honor the Earth will support Lame Deer-based Native Action's grassroots efforts to get out the Indian vote, as well as to advocate for the election of pro-Indian, pro-environment candidates. Special focus will go to helping Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark O'Keefe who has vowed to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's Buffalo by executive order within 30 minutes of taking office.
"The elections in Montana represent clear-cut choices for Indian people, our land and in particular, the buffalo," says Honor the Earth spokesperson Winona LaDuke. "In the year 2000, it's time to right the historic injustices of the past and create a new page in history."
