Red Earth To Offer Basket Weaving Class

Oklahoma City, OK - Red Earth, Inc. and the Red Earth Education Department are excited to announce Ms. Peggy Brenner will be conducting a beginning level series on Native American Twill Basket Weaving.

The course objectives will be as follows: 1) Weave a 10 inch long x 5 ½ inch wide twill plaited basket, with a diamond pattern, that is common in many of the woodland tribes of the Southeast, cut and weave the base of a basket and sides if time permits; 2) Learn techniques for making dye baths from various native plants; 3) Instruct students on the significance of the Cherokee clan and tribal symbols; and, 4) Explain why Hopi patterns may resemble those of some Southeast tribes.

The class will meet every Saturday, January 13, 2001 through February 17, 2001, 10:00 a.m. until 12, noon. Limited in number early registration is important. Cost is $50. Ms. Brenner is a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and an award winning weaver. She began weaving Cherokee baskets in 1989 after learning from the master basket weaver and Red Earth Honored One, Mavis Doering. Ms. Brenner also weaves the wicker plaited double wall basket that she learned from Mavis and the plaited baskets with the twill design found in ancient baskets from the Southeast.

Ms. Brenner has had her work shown in juried art shows from the SW Museum of the Indian in Los Angeles to the Santa Fe Market in New Mexico and has been a regular of the Red Earth Cultural Festival. Red Earth is dedicated to the preservation of American Indian cultures.
