The Secwepemc of the Interior of British Columbia, Canada call on all supporters to help us protect our traditional homelands from on-going encroachment and destruction by large scale tourism and resource extraction.We are people of the land and have been given the responsibility to care for and protect the land for eternity. We have lived on the land for thousands of years and the land has provided all foods and medicines necessary for our survival.
Today we are facing the extensive destruction of our food-gathering and spiritual places. One if the areas being severely impacted is Skwelkwekwelt. Nippon Cable and Sun Peaks Resort is planning a massive expansion project which would include;
-development of ski runs and lifts on Mt. Morissey-eventual construction of 5 skiable mountains
-construction of a Delta Hotel
-expansion of golf course to 18 holes
-construction of townhouses on McGillvery Creek
-creation of a year round resort bring thousands of tourists into our traditional use areas
Sun Peaks Ski Resort is located within our 1862 Neskonlith Douglas reserve which the Federal Government refuses to recognize and within our traditional territory.
We have not given our consent to the present development nor the massive expansion project. We remain adamantly opposed to all further development within this area and other traditional use areas. You can help by writing...
