The Oglala Commemoration Planning Committee has begun the fund raising portion of the Commemoration. This fund raising portion is incredibly important for several reasons. First of all, any an all proceeds from the Commemoration go directly to the Leonard Peltier Oglala Projects. This is a program set up by Leonard Peltier, himself, to assist the people of the Oglala, South Dakota community. Some of these programs include the building of a traditional Lakota immersion/freedom school at the Jumping Bull Ranch (the site of the 1975 fire-fight). This school will use Lakota speaking teachers and elders so that the students will learn not only the required courses of study, but also they will learn the Lakota language, the stories, the culture, history and ceremonies of the people.
Other programs will include an intermural youth sports program, a community gymnasium and health center, as well as a community center to be used as an outlet for information and programs for all members of the Oglala Community.
Funds generated by the early fund raising programs will also go to help sponsor the annual Oglala Commemoration on June 26th, 2002 in Oglala, SD. This includes helping pay deposits for facilities to be used, rental of equipment needed, travel expenses for some of the dignitaries who will be in attendance, and various other costs.
The first part of the fund raising efforts is an online auction being sponsored and operated completely by the Planning Committee. The items available for auction are all donated and all the funds raised by the auction are earmarked for the Commemoration and the Oglala Projects.
The Oglala Commemoration has the full support and backing of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee and Leonard Peltier himself.
We urge you to please visit the Auction site and the Commemoration site, to learn more about why the commemoration is in existence.
Please visit soon and often and distribute this information to other mailing lists, online communities, and web pages you may frequent.
Thank you for your continued support!
