Happy Camp is very pleased to announce the successful publication of the new web site 'Karuk Language Resources on the Web.' The site was designed by a team of students from Happy Camp High School with their Advanced Multimedia Technologies teacher, Diane Oliver and, Susan Smith, a student and teacher of the Karuk language and a member of the Karuk Language Restoration Committee.'Karuk Language Resources on the Web' incorporates an older Karuk language web site done by the 1999 Karuk Language class of Hoopa Valley High School and a home page from which both language lesson collections can be visited.
The original web site still gets nearly 200 visits per month, and has generated numerous requests for more language content. This new site is our response to that demand.
Visitors to the site will find a home page with links to the two language collections. In the collections, viewers will hear a Karuk word or phrase and associate it with a picture and/or the English equivalent.
The Happy Camp High School students applied their knowledge of sound graphic design principles and web site development to this project. Each student took on a topic page, chose images for that page, designed a background which contained a repeating pattern of a Karuk expression related to that topic, and used the buttons and banners created by the class as a whole.
The URL, Internet address, is http://www.karuk.org/.
We would like to thank the following organizations for their support of this project:
*Computer and Consulting Services, the Happy Camp Community Computer Center,
*Happy Camp High School, the Karuk Language Program, the Karuk Tribe of California, Learn and Serve America, Northern California Indian Development
*Council, Siskiyou County Regional Occupational Program and the California Workforce Investment Act.
