Saturday, Feb 1, 2003 Annual Community Meeting at 12 noon, Everyone is invited. Snacks and beverages provided. Board of Directors Elections Feb 1, 2003 voting (AIC membership and tribal ID required). If you would like to become a member of the Board of Directors please contact Christine Redcloud 773-761-5000. You must submit a letter of intent, signed petition (10 current 2003 AIC member's signatures) and Resume', by January 20th to make the ballot.Pow-Wow & Potluck dinner to follow at 7:00 P.M., election results after ballots are counted.
"Spirit of the Plants - Native Medicine Garden" needs volunteers to help plan, prepare, plant and caretake a medicine plant garden at the American Indian Center. Chicago Greencorps will provide horticulturist, materials, time, energy and tools, we need a group of committed Garden Stewards to bring this vision to bloom and to tend it through the summer. Also needed: Medicine Plant Council - Elder's, young ones and in-betweeners to guide the vision of the garden, bring knowledge & plant lore to the People, and help create this sacred community space. Volunteers needed at Greencorps workshops on February 1 - 8 - 22, 2003 and March 8, 2003. Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., the Newberry Library, Red Path Theater, the American Indian Center, and NAES (Native American Educational Services) College will present the eighth annual storytelling program, Winter: A Time of Telling, featuring American Indian trickster tales. General admission is $10. Seniors and educators receive a discounted admission of $7, and students and Newberry Library Associates receive a discounted admission of $5. The program is free to children under 12. For tickets, call (312) 255-3700.
The artistic director for Winter: A Time of Telling will be Kelly Gilbreth (White Earth Ojibwa) from Red Path Theater. Storytellers will be Florence Dunham (Mohawk), Larry Lockwood (Northern Cheyenne) and Andrew Favorite (Ojibwa White Earth Band). Dunham is the granddaughter of a clan mother of the bear clan of the Mohawk tribe, and she shares stories of her childhood on the reserve. Lockwood is the cultural instructor of the Native American Heritage Perspective, and his presentations focus on the Grandfather Drum, War Dance Regalia, and other authentic cultural items. Favorite currently works for White Earth's tribal archives and history department, and he has given American Indian presentations for a wide variety of causes over the past 30 years. February 8, 2001: "50 Years of Powwow" photo exhibition opens at the Chicago Historical Society.
