Coffee Hour, Saturday, November 8, at 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Resource Center of the Americas (Romero room in the basement) 3109 Minnehaha Ave, Mpls, 26th Ave. S. becomes Minnehaha at Lake Street. The Resource Center is located 1/2 block South of Lake Street). $4 charge for non members/$3 members.Since the early 1990s anti Indian groups have been organizing in Minnesota. These groups claim their desire for everyone to be "equal" under the law, or as they call it, "One Nation." However these groups don't recognize federal laws protecting the treaty rights of sovereign Indian nations. Recently through misinformation and fear tactics these groups have taken a strong foothold in the Mille Lacs area. The Mille Lacs County Commissioners have spent over $1 million dollars to date suing the Mille Lacs Band in federal court in an effort to eliminate their sovereignty and treaty rights. Powerful people in state and local government, and others, also including local businesses have supported these efforts creating a climate of fear and mistrust.
Don Wedll, a longtime planner for the Mille Lacs Band, and a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about treaties, sovereignty and the current situation will walk you through the progression of this history. This coffee hour is sponsored by HONOR (Honor Our Neighbors Origins and Rights), an American Indian governed advocacy organization whose national office is located in Minneapolis.
