The world premiere of the documentary film "Alcatraz Is Not An Island" will take place on Friday Nov. 12, 1999 at the American Indian Film Festival. The Festival kicks off Nov. 11 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and moves to the Kabuki Theater Monday Nov. 14.

"Alcatraz Is Not An Island," three years in the making, looks back at the events that took place in 1969 when a small group of Native American students and community members tirelessly attempted to regain control of Indian land for the first time since the 1880s -- the beginning of a new era of self-determination and Indian political activism. "Alcatraz," Produced by Jon Plutte, Directed by James Fortier, and Executive Produced by Millie Ketcheshawno, recounts how this historical event altered U.S. Government Indian Policy and programs -- and forever changed the way American Indians viewed themselves, their culture and their heritage.

Featuring testimonials from Alcatraz Occupation Warriors LaNada Boyer, John Trudell, and many others; never before seen archival film footage taken behind the scenes of the occupation, news reel footage, award winning historical still photography, dramatic re-enactments, narration by Tantoo Cardinal, and poetry readings by Ojibway recording artists and actress Wayquay, "Alcatraz" delivers a powerful story of historical importance, personal sacrifice, tragedy, cultural renewal, and hope.
