To find information about a topic, simply type in a few keywords. The more detailed your query, the more relevant your results.

A note on case sensitivity: All words or phrases containing an upper-case character will be treated as case sensitive. A search on "tears" will match "tears", "TEARS", and "Tears", while the search term "TEARS" will match "TEARS" only and the term "Tears" will match "Tears" only. It is probably wise to use lower-case searches to get the best results.

This search engine also comes with some advanced capabilities to help you find exactly what you're looking for. These capabilities are best shown with a few examples:

Will find documents containing the word "cherokee" (upper- or lower-case) if the document also contains the word "oklahoma" (upper- or lower-case).

Will find documents containing the word "cherokee" (upper- or lower-case) if the document does not contain the word "oklahoma" (upper- or lower-case).

Finds any document containing the word "oklahoma" ("cherokee" is a preferred, but not mandatory, word). If the word, "cherokee" is also in the document, the results will appear higher in the results list.

Will only return documents containing the phrase, "Trail of Tears" (case sensitive).

Will return documents containing the phrase, "TRAIL OF TEARS", "Trail of Tears", or "trail of tears" (case insensitive).

Finds "Leonard Peltier", "LEONARD PELTIER", "leonard peltier", or any other document that contains both "leo" and "pel". The asterisk (*) is a wildcard (see the limitations about its use below).

This search will return any documents containing the words "Indian", "Tribe", "Tribes", "Band", or "Bands" (all case sensitive) as long as the document does not contain the word "cherokee". The documents must have a form of "Indian" and "Tribe" in them, but not necessarily the word "Band" or "Bands". If "Band" or "Bands" is in the document, the document will appear earlier in the returned search list.

The words "What", "is", "a", and "for" are ignored along with the question mark. Any document that contains the word "pole" and, optionally, the word "totem" is returned in the search list. The term "*pole" might return "totempole" (if misspelled; totem pole is two words), "pole", or "Walpole" (an island).

Same as the previous example except, in this case, the "What", "is", "a", "for", and question mark are no longer ignored since they are part of a phrase.

The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words; that is, the query powerfu*earch would not match the first sentence of this paragraph - and it can represent, at most, four letters or numbers. To avoid overly broad searches, the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three characters. For example, a search for th* would be ignored.
